The first Full Moon in August is in the sign of Aquarius and it occurs on Tuesday August 1st, at 2:31pm EDT. Often dubbed the Sturgeon Moon, this is the 2nd Full SuperMoon out of 4 that we are experiencing successively this summer.

What is a SuperMoon?

SuperMoon means that the moon appears bigger and brighter in the sky because it’s at the closest point to earth in its orbit. Astrologically, the SuperMoon is associated with heightened emotions and intensified energy. During a SuperMoon, you may experience increased sensitivity, vivid dreams, or intensified intuitive insights.

Full Moon in Aquarius

This Full Moon in Aquarius is a time for us to embrace our authenticity, honor our individuality and to consider how we fit in with the collective. Not only how we fit in with the collective, but it also begs us to question where we are headed as a collective & if we like the direction we’re going in.

Venus is also Retrograde during this time, meaning we may feel a pull to reflect on what we care about, reevaluate relationships, inner reflection and self-love, revisiting past loves, and even exploring some unconscious desires.

Sturgeon Moon Origin

This Full Moon is called the “Sturgeon Moon”, after North America's largest fish.

Sturgeons can live up to 60 years, growing to be over 20 ft long. The Sturgeon is a sacred symbol and has been used in many cultures around the world to represent various things from good luck, abundance, happiness, wealth, fertility, a long life, strength, and power.

The origin of the name "Sturgeon Moon" comes from Indigenous traditions, specifically from the Algonquin tribes who lived in the northeast of North America. These tribes used a lunar calendar to track the months, and each full moon was given a name based on the seasonal events or natural occurrences happening around that time.

In August, during this full moon, the Indigenous noticed an abundance of sturgeon fish, making it easier to catch them during this period. This is due to the sturgeon fish, who normally spend their time at the bottom of lakes, rise to the surface as they look for food. As a result, the Indigenous named this full moon the "Sturgeon Moon" to mark the peak of the sturgeon fishing season.
