Crystal Shapes & What They Mean

Did you know there maybe a reason you’re drawn to certain crystal shapes (cluster, sphere, tower)? Let’s explore different crystal shapes and what those shapes mean metaphysically.

Tumble

Tumbles are very common. You can often find these smaller crystals in most beginner and advanced crystal collections, and in most local crystal shops. Tumbles tend to be priced reasonably and are a great way to see if a stone resonates with you, or if you enjoy working with it. Beyond the wonderful price, tumbles are also great for many purposes. They are small enough that they can be carried with you in a pocket, purse, and even in your bra if you’re without pockets. Tumbles can be used in healing grids as well as in other rituals, sachets, spell bags and travel altars.

Crystal Cluster

Similar to a crystal point, clusters are great for transmitting energy, except even beyond one point, they have multiple. Energy streams from the different energy points in the cluster, making them very powerful and exceptional for spreading energy around a space. They can be a great decor piece due to how stunning they are, but along with looking great, they can send their distinct energies across a room. Depending on the type of crystal your cluster is they can stream different energies in your space. For example, clear quartz clusters are great for cleansing energy, and a celestite cluster is a great crystal to keep in a bedroom to help with a restful sleep and connection to the spirit realm.

Freeform

Freeforms are typically irregular forms of crystal that are carved or polished to some degree (making them different from a cluster). Freeforms tend to have a flat bottom, making them stand beautifully and look great as decor pieces.

Tower Point

Crystal towers are a great tool to use in crystal healing or transmuting energy because (similar to crystal pyramids), the towers generate energy from the base and send that amplified energy out the apex of the tower. Towers are often used in crystal grids to help transmute the energy of the surrounding crystals. Towers make great tools for manifesting!

Double Terminated

Often referred to as DT, double terminated crystals are just that - double (meaning both) terminated (ends) are pointed. These crystals are similar metaphysically to the tower point, however instead of just having energy flow through the top point of the crystal, we have the energy flow through both top and bottom points. This energy flow through dual points allows energy to enter through one side, be transmuted through the crystal, and to flow through the other side. This flow and transference of energy is a wonderful tool for healing work, body work and works great in meditation.

DT points are also wonderful to use in crystal grids because it helps the energy of the crystals transfer between one another, amplifying the energy and allowing potent transmission.

Flame

Crystal flames are a great way to connect with your own inner fire, passion and drive. The energy of the crystal flame is carried from the base and up the spiral of the crystal shape, creating a sense of momentum and movement. This energy build up makes crystal flames wonderful tools for getting things done and creating a ‘fire’ under your butt to stop procrastinating.

Flames can be a thoughtful gift for a Fire Sign and a great addition to someone’s crystal collection if they lack Fire in their astrology chart. Flames can also help you tap into Kundalini energy and they make great crystals to hold in meditation.

Palm Stone

Palm stones are just that, stones that fit in the palm of your hand. They are typically polished and round and fit nicely in the palm of your hand. Palm stones work well in meditation as they are easy to hold and they also make great tools for doing healing bodywork because they can lay flat on the surface of the skin without falling like a sphere or a tumble would. Some practitioners will place specific palm stones on main chakras or energy points of the body to spread the energy of the crystal or to activate energy points along the body.

Sphere

Spheres are one of my personal favorite crystal shapes. Spheres are amazing crystals to have in your collection because they send energy all around the sphere. Instead of having the energy point in one direction (like with a tower), a sphere shaped crystal sends those vibrations all around it in a 360 of magic and energy. Nowadays there are so many unique and beautiful sphere stands that the entire sphere crystal can be an absolute work of art in any space. Due to their radiating energy, they also make great crystals to use in meditations and in crystal grids.

Egg

Crystal eggs are powerful tools to summon or represent new beginnings. Eggs are often associated with Spring (aka Maiden energy) and thus are even used in crystal shaped to embody that newness that we find in spring. Crystal eggs can also be a great tool for someone who is pregnant or wanting to be pregnant as they represent fertility. Crystal eggs are also commonly used as display pieces by placing them on a sphere stand or crystal stand.

Heart

Heart-shaped crystals are a great tool to use if you want to practice unconditional love, self-love, improve relationships or even attract a lover or friend. We each have such a strong connection to the shape of a heart, it immediately creates a clear and simple frame of reference for our intentions. When we have these clear intentions (like seeing a heart and thinking about love) it gives the stone a magical sense of power. Heart shaped crystals come in all shapes and sizes and can be a great gift for a loved one (I mean, most of us want crystals not roses, am I right?!) or a self-love treat.

Pyramid

Pyramids are sacred geometrical shapes that, when used in conjunction with the healing powers of crystals, can be true powerhouses for using energy. Energy is able to be drawn from the base of the pyramid and transmuted through the apex to help send your energy into the ether. Pyramids are great tools to hold while meditating as your physical body mimics that of the pyramid with your base (Root Chakra) connecting to earth and the top of your heat (Crown Chakra) connecting to the spirit realms. Crystal pyramids bring great energy to the spaces they’re placed in and they make a wonderful addition to any room in your home or office.

Slab / Slices

Slabs and slices of crystal can be used in many ways. One of my personal favorite ways to use them is as a trinket dish. By placing other items on top of the slice of crystal, you are not only infusing those items with the radiating energy of the crystal, but they look gorgeous and make a space seem less cluttered. They work well to hold necklaces, rings, perfumes, flowers, and even other crystals. Slabs and slices can also be used as home decor (placed upright or held on a stand) as a form of art, they can be used in crystal grids, and as charging plates for other divination tools, crystals, and books.

Stick / Wand

Crystal sticks or wands are crystals that are shaped into those shapes. These crystals are commonly used for cleansing energy and directing energy. When directing energy with a wand, when the wand is pointed away from you it’s sending energy in that direction and when it’s pointing toward you, you can feel the properties of that given crystal wand being sent inward. Crystal sticks or wands are often used in energy healing work as massage tools or to ‘cut’ or remove energy in the body or auric field.
